Set up the reception screen, thermal printer and scanner

A short guide for front-desk staff and center owners: the hardware, the screen shortcut, the printer and the scanner.

What you need

DeviceUse
A Windows 10 or 11 computer (touch screen optional)The reception screen
An 80 mm or 58 mm thermal receipt printer (USB)Payment receipts and “Today’s summary”
A USB scanner in keyboard mode that reads Code 128 and QRScanning student cards

1. One account per device

Give each reception screen the account of the person working on it (“Center settings” → “Users”). They see the tabs their permissions allow: “Collect”, “Attendance”, “Recitation & homework” and “Exams”.

2. The reception screen shortcut (Google Chrome)

  1. Create the folder C:\ECMS\pos.
  2. Right-click the desktop → “New” → “Shortcut”, and paste this line with your center’s address in place of <center>:
"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --user-data-dir="C:\ECMS\pos" --kiosk --kiosk-printing --no-first-run --autoplay-policy=no-user-gesture-required --disable-pinch --overscroll-history-navigation=0 https://<center>.ecms.tadreb.live/pos
  1. Name it “Reception screen”, open it and sign in with the reception account; the sign-in is kept.
  • --kiosk opens full screen, and --kiosk-printing prints receipts with no print dialog.
  • Exit with Alt + F4. Never use this shortcut for normal browsing or for printing cards.
  • If a Chrome window with the same profile is already open, close it first; Chrome ignores the shortcut’s options otherwise.

3. The receipt printer

  1. Install the printer driver and set the paper size to the roll width.
  2. Make it the default Windows printer and turn off “Let Windows manage my default printer”.
  3. In the system: “Center settings” → “Finance” → “Receipt paper”: “Thermal 80 mm” or “Thermal 58 mm”.
  4. Print one receipt by hand from the same profile without --kiosk --kiosk-printing: margins “None”, scale 100%, no headers and footers. Chrome keeps these choices for silent printing.

4. The scanner

  • USB keyboard (HID) mode, Enter sent after every scan, Alt mode off.
  • An English keyboard layout is best; the screen also works with Arabic.
  • Test it in Notepad: the code appears, then a new line. For a slow scanner, raise “Gap between card-reader keystrokes” in “Device settings”.

Device settings

From the settings button on the reception screen (“Device settings”), stored on this device only: “Print the receipt right after collecting”, “Sound on scan and payment”, “Full screen automatically when the screen opens”, and clearing the screen after a payment or when idle.
